Frequently Asked Questions
Are you accepting new clients?
Yes. Availability changes as new clients enter the practice, but we currently do have availability for individual therapy (via telehealth). To get the current availability estimates, please send a message.
Why should I work with you?
It’s a good question. I provide extensive written and audio resources on this page and elsewhere so you can get a sense of my perspective on therapy. But individual therapy is a kind of partnership, and it is important to have a good “fit.” It is hard to figure out “fit” without meeting, so I offer a free consultation to anyone who asks. I hope we’re a good fit but, if not, I can try to provide guidance for finding the right therapist for you.
What is your training and expertise?
I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings at hospitals and clinics throughout the Boston area. I have special interest in addictions and have been involved in addiction treatment programs at Tufts and Boston Medical Center. I additionally have training in the treatment of psychosis and have spent years in psychosis treatment, focusing in treatment both with adolescent and adult clients. Finally, I have an interest in the theoretical or philosophical aspects of mental health and have published widely on these topics. For more details, see my complete CV.
What is your education?
I received an MSW in Clinical Social Work from Simmons University. Prior to becoming a therapist, I was a philosophy professor, and I still teach philosophy courses at Lesley University. I hold a PhD in Phillosophy from Princeton and an AB in Literature from Harvard College.
What kind of clients do you see?
I see adults (18 or older) who are located in Massachusetts. I have special training and background in addictions and mood or thought disorders (such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia). However, many of my clients are managing general life transitions, rather than any particular diagnosis. Given my background in philosophy, many of my clients have an interest in academic or intellectual pursuits, though again this is not true of everyone.
What is your therapeutic method or style?
I work from a broad perspective, informed by my work in philosophy as well as my training in psychiatric settings. I am sympathetic with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a style of therapy that I discuss in this article. However, my central commitment is that the interests of the individual outweigh any particular method. See this page for more about the approach of the Cambridge Therapy Center.
How often do we meet?
It depends. Typically, I meet with a client once per week, though with other clients we meet biweekly, especially after we have been working together for a while. I always am willing to schedule extra sessions on an “as needed” basis, especially when someone is experiencing a time of crisis.
Do we meet online or in person?
Currently, all sessions are held online via a secure telehealth platforms. This allows clients to have their appointments from anywhere in Massachusetts, so long as they have an internet connection.
We are planning on adding in person offices in the Harvard Square area in 2025. If you are specifically interested in in person appointments or have questions about the timeline for this process, please contact us with any questions.
How much does it cost?
$175 per session. This is commensurate with other private practices in the Boston area. Where appropriate, I often a “sliding scale” for clients who are on a fixed income or in financial distress.
Do you take insurance?
In order to provide personal and flexible treatment, the Cambridge Therapy Center is not “in-network” with any insurance panels.
However, if you have insurance that includes “out-of-network” benefits, we can provide an itemized invoice to submit for reimbursement. Please contact us if you have questions about this process.
